14 June Copley v Clayton
Copley won by 6 runs
The under 9s braved the Wintry conditions, including heavy rainfall at half time, to record their second victory of the season and a timely reversal of recent fortunes in a tightly fought match against a strong Clayton team.
Captain Joshua Chaplin won the toss and chose to field on the lush wicket and tight early bowling from Sam Senior and Joe Walsh put pressure on the Clayton batsmen, resulting in a run out and a further wicket from Ben Hodgson. Some of the middle order Clayton batsmen pushed the score on and a few wides boosted the total further, before Benjamin Cliff took a further wicket in an excellent spell to close the innings at 150.
Steady progress was made by the early Copley batting, punctuated by some lusty blows from Joe Walsh (three sixes and a four) and a flurry of wickets which left the game well balanced. Some of the quickest bowling the under 9s have faced this season was well defended. Sam Senior and Morgan Turner had an excellent partnership, including some sharp singles before Benjamin Cliff and Ben Hodgson arrived at the wicket as the final pair. Both players hit big sixes but with a wicket also being taken it resulted in six runs being needed at the start of the last over. A six and four were duly hit off the first two balls but a wicket fell on the third, followed by a scampered single on the fifth to leave the scores level with one ball left. A towering six by Ben Hodgson sealed a great team win.
24 May Barkisland v Copley
Copley lost by 43 runs
On a hot summer evening (at last!) Copley travelled to Barkisland for their next Under 9 League game.
Skipper Samuel Smith won the toss and put an experienced Barkisland side in to bat. Their first pair put on 20 runs in their 4 overs – some good bowling from Harriet Grace and debutants Finlay Grace & Burhan Ramzan keeping the score down. Barkisland’s batters steadily scored runs until Harriet got a wicket in her 2nd over when Copley’s 3rd debutant Joe Walsh took an excellent catch behind the stumps. Her brother Finlay took the 2nd wicket in the next over with a superb caught & bowled. Some loose bowling late on allowed the home side to score 199 off their 16 overs but this could have been more had it not been for some excellent fielding from Joe, Ben Hodgson & Benjamin Cliff.
After a short break for a well earned cold drink and the reapplication of the suncream, Copley openers Ben H & Finlay Turpin struggled to score against some tight bowling from the home side. After losing 2 wickets to careless run outs and then some good running from Harriet and Joe, final pair ‘Little & Large’ – Finlay Grace & Benjamin Cliff – came in to try to get somewhere near the 199 required. Despite a valiant attempt Copley fell 43 runs short but Finlay G finished top scorer with 8 on his debut.
17 May Copley v Stones
Stones won by 7 runs
On a chilly but fine evening, Copley played host to Stones in the 3rd week of the new Under 9’s League.
Copley’s skipper Joshua Chaplin won the toss and asked Stones to bat who stated well, scoring 22 off the first 2 overs until Ben Hodgson got the first wicket with his first ball. Some tight bowling from Benjamin Cliff, Joshua Chaplin & Samuel Smith restricted the visitors to start with but some lose bowling followed and Copley conceded 17 wides (+34 runs) in the whole innings. In the 2nd half of the innings, Copley got 5 wickets to reduce Stones to 166 net. Pick of the bowlers were Ben Hodgson with 2-
Copley started well in reply with Benjamin Cliff & Ben Hodgson putting on 30 in their 4 overs; Benjamin scored 4 fours in his 20 runs, although this total was reduced by 15 due to 3 wickets falling. A quick 15 not out, including 3 fours, from Joshua Chaplin moved the score along but some tight bowling meant that the last pair Sam Senior & Ben Abel-
8 May Upper Hopton v Copley
Upper Hopton won by 9 runs
The match was played on a difficult pitch due to the recent rain and uncut outfield.
Copley skipper Sam Senior won the toss and elected to field. Batting and bowling was tricky. Upper Hopton only scored 13 runs off the bat however they totalled 164 due to some wayward bowling from Copley, giving away 21 wides and 7 no balls.
Pick of the bowlers was Joshua Chaplin who bowled 2 overs for just one run. Joshua also continued his brilliant fielding from last week when he ran out one of the Upper Hopton openers in the second over.
Copley managed the batting conditions slightly better, scoring 21 off the bat but lost 3 wickets. Final pair Sam Senior and Ben Abel Lockyer went in for the last 4 overs with Copley needing over 30 runs to win which seemed a tall order.
However with some great running between the wickets, the pair batted really well putting on 25 runs, just falling short, left hander Sam finishing in double figures for the second week running and Ben with 5.
A chilly evening and not a great result on a difficult surface but the boys and girls gave 100% and it proved a close game in the end.
3 May Shelf v Copley
Copley won by 95 runs
The rain held off just enough for the first game of the season to go ahead at newcomers Shelf.
Batting first Copley, with opener Sam Senior scoring 17 not out and Ben’s Hodgson and Cliff batting last both hitting 4’s, amassed 199 runs losing only one wicket.
An inexperienced Shelf side fell short by 95 runs, losing 10 wickets, 8 of these run outs by star fielder Joshua Chaplin.
Good, tight bowling from left armer Sam Senior (1-
